My Bloody Valentine, 1991. The wall. Fuzz so thick the chords lose their edges, a pitch that never settles because the tremolo arm is always in hand, and reverb that swells in backwards. Strummed hard and constantly.

Glide
Glide is a slow, wandering pitch drift, the stand-in for holding the tremolo arm while you strum. On a real guitar this is technique, not a pedal.
Reverse
Reverse swells into each chord. Turning it up also lengthens it. Keep strumming so the swells overlap.
The three tones
What each preset is chasing
Only Shallow
Doing the workGlide and fuzz together. The pitch bends constantly, so the fuzz never settles on one set of overtones, and the wall doubles it so each side of the stereo field wobbles differently.
How to play itKeep the tremolo arm in your strumming hand and rock it as you strum. Do not stop strumming for the bends.
To Here Knows When
Doing the workThe reverse reverb. Each chord's reverb builds up behind it and peaks just as the next one lands, so the whole thing seems to breathe in.
How to play itSlow chord changes over constant strumming. Hold each chord at least two seconds so the swell has time to arrive.
Sometimes
Doing the workTone, not gain. The fuzz tone is rolled back so it behaves like a pad under the chords, and the wall makes it wide.
How to play itGentle, even strumming. If you are recording, an acoustic part on top of this is the classic pairing.
Build it for real
The same sound with real pedals
Order. Fuzz first, straight from the guitar, so the vibrato arm bends feed it directly. Any doubling or modulation after the fuzz, then reverb last.
Amp. Loud and fairly clean. The fuzz does the work; a high-gain amp on top turns it to sludge.
Guitar. Glide needs a guitar with a floating vibrato you can hold while strumming, Jazzmaster or Jaguar style or any trem you can keep in hand. No pedal fully replaces it.
Entry
roughly $250 to $400 new, plus a guitar with a vibrato arm
EHX Big Muff Pisustain high, tone below noon
Boss RV-6modulated hall for movement
Reverse reverb is the hard part at this tier. Few budget reverbs have a reverse mode, so check the mode list before buying.
Mid
roughly $550 to $800 new
EHX Big Muff Pior any Muff-style fuzz
Boss CE-2Wvibrato mode, slow, for pitch wobble
A multi-mode reverb with a reverse settingreverse, around one second
The CE-2W in vibrato mode gets surprisingly close to glide when you cannot hold the arm.
Boutique
$1,200 and up new
Death By Audio Fuzz Warhuge, wide fuzz
Chase Bliss Warped Vinylslow, deep pitch wobble

Two guitars, or one guitar double-tracked and panned hard, matters more than anything on this list.
Totals are rough street prices for new pedals in late 2026 and will drift; used is usually far cheaper. The rig above uses original pedal designs, not models of these.
Fuzz first, straight from the guitar, so the vibrato arm bends feed it directly. Any doubling or modulation after the fuzz, then reverb last. Loud and fairly clean. The fuzz does the work; a high-gain amp on top turns it to sludge. On the rig above, switch each pedal off and on to hear what it adds.
What pedals do I need for a My Bloody Valentine-style tone on a budget?
A starting point, in order: EHX Big Muff Pi, then Boss RV-6. That is roughly $250 to $400 new, plus a guitar with a vibrato arm. Reverse reverb is the hard part at this tier. Few budget reverbs have a reverse mode, so check the mode list before buying.
Can I play my own guitar through the Loveless rig?
Yes. Plug your guitar into an audio interface, choose Live input, allow microphone access and wear wired headphones. Chrome on a laptop or desktop works best. Without an interface, the demo guitar plays through the rig.
