The Verve, 1993. A guitar sound built more from echo than from chords. Single notes swell in, repeat and stack until one guitarist sounds like three. The drive is light, the delays are long and dark, and the room never ends.

Plug into an audio interface, pick Live input and wear wired headphones. Chrome on a laptop or desktop works best.
Swell
The Swell footswitch fades each new note in, like rolling your volume knob. Pick, let it bloom, and the echoes build the chord.
Why the echoes sit after the cab
Echoes into a driven amp turn to mush. Here they run after the cab, like a studio send, so the repeats stay clear while the drive and swirl still hit the amp.
The three tones
What each preset is chasing
Star Sail
Doing the workThe echo, not the guitar. Repeats around half a second apart, with enough feedback that each note comes back three or four times, darkened so they sit behind the next note. The phaser moves slowly enough to hear as a tide rather than a whoosh.
How to play itPlay fewer notes than you think. Pick one, let it swell in, wait for the second repeat, then play the next.
Slide Away
Doing the workAmp drive. The pedal adds grit, the amp does the heavy lifting, and the echoes are pulled back so they thicken the chords instead of blurring them.
How to play itBig open chords with the top strings ringing. Hit hard and let the sustain carry; do not mute between changes.
Already There
Doing the workThe swell and the room. With the pick attack removed, each note arrives as a pad, and a seven to nine second reverb glues them into one chord.
How to play itArpeggiate slowly across two or three strings and let every note overlap the last.
Build it for real
The same sound with real pedals
Order. Drive before the phaser so the swirl moves the dirt, not the other way round. Delay before reverb, always, so the echoes sit inside the room instead of smearing it.
Amp. An AC30-style amp just on the edge of breaking up is the reference. Any clean amp with headroom works if the drive pedal supplies the edge.
Entry
roughly $350 to $450 new
Boss SD-1light overdrive, gain low
MXR Phase 90slow rate
TC Electronic Flashback 2tape mode, long and dark
TC Electronic Hall of Fame 2hall, long decay
Your guitar volume knob does the swells for free. A volume pedal after the drive makes them easier.
Mid
roughly $650 to $900 new
JHS Morning Glorytransparent drive
EHX Small Stoneslow, subtle
Boss RE-2 Space Echotape-style repeats with wobble
Walrus Audio Slölong, dark ambient reverb
The tape-style delay is the piece that matters most. Spend there first.
Boutique
$1,300 and up new
Strymon Sunsetlow gain, open
Chase Bliss Wombtonephaser with deep control
Strymon El Capistantape echo, worn tape settings
Strymon BigSkylarge hall or cloud, long pre-delay
At this tier the gains are in control: tap tempo, presets and expression. The sound is not dramatically better than mid.
Totals are rough street prices for new pedals in late 2026 and will drift; used is usually far cheaper. The rig above uses original pedal designs, not models of these.

What pedals do I need for a Verve-style tone on a budget?
A starting point, in order: Boss SD-1, then MXR Phase 90, then TC Electronic Flashback 2, then TC Electronic Hall of Fame 2. That is roughly $350 to $450 new. Your guitar volume knob does the swells for free. A volume pedal after the drive makes them easier.
Can I play my own guitar through the Storm in Heaven rig?
Yes. Plug your guitar into an audio interface, choose Live input, allow microphone access and wear wired headphones. Chrome on a laptop or desktop works best. Without an interface, the demo guitar plays through the rig.
